Sitting for long periods has become a normal part of modern life. Whether at a desk, in a car, or on the sofa, most adults spend the majority of their waking hours in a seated position. But what feels comfortable in the short term can cause significant problems over time.
Research consistently shows that prolonged sitting has a wide range of negative effects on the body — many of which develop gradually and go unnoticed until they become a real problem.
One of the most immediate consequences is increased tension in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. When we sit, particularly in a slouched or forward-leaning posture, certain muscles are placed under constant, low-level strain while others become inactive and weak. Over time, this creates muscle imbalances that alter the way we move and load our joints — increasing the risk of pain and injury.
The hip flexors are a prime example. When shortened by prolonged sitting, they pull the pelvis forward, increasing the curve of the lower back and placing additional pressure on the lumbar spine. This is a common underlying cause of chronic low back pain that many people are unaware of.
Sitting also affects circulation. When the legs are stationary for extended periods, blood flow slows, increasing the risk of swelling, fatigue in the legs, and in more serious cases, deep vein thrombosis.
Beyond the musculoskeletal system, a sedentary lifestyle has broader health implications, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and even mental health challenges such as fatigue and reduced concentration.
The good news is that the negative effects of prolonged sitting are largely preventable and reversible. Regular movement breaks, targeted exercises to counteract the effects of sitting, postural awareness, and an ergonomically optimised workspace can make a significant difference.
A physiotherapist can assess how your sitting habits are affecting your body and provide a personalised programme to correct imbalances, reduce pain, and keep you moving well — no matter how much of your day is spent at a desk.
